There's a new Penric & Desdemona book out!

The title is Darksight Dare and it dropped a couple of days ago.

HOWEVER, there may be a problem with the Kindle release. There are reports that the edition that was available as soon it released was only about half there. The Apple edition was complete.

I haven't read it yet, I'm working on a 'making of' book of Monty Python's Life of Brian! As it is one of my absolute favorite books of all time, it has a little priority. I'll read the Bujold next.

Event: Three Weeks For Dreamwidth, starting today!

[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

The three weeks event celebrating Dreamwidth is starting today!! \o/ There's already a fresh friending meme posted over the comm thanks to [personal profile] matsushima!

Over at [community profile] bnha_fans, we're running a Rec Fest again, and I posted the announcement on the first day for the first time in what feels like 70 years ;v; XD Sadly, it seems like the bug in which, if a journal or comm is set to default to nsfw/18+, it won't show up on the Latest Page feed for the event even if the post itself is marked "No Ages Restriction". Sad that the comm contributions won't show up there, but since this post will be, hey! Boku no Hero Academia/My Hero Academia fans out there, we're running a Rec Fest if you're looking for new fanworks or have some you'd like to rec! :D

Looking forward to see the various ways people participate this year! :D If this is your first time (or not, for that matter), you might enjoy the blogging questionnaire [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith shared a few years ago. That was a good time, replying to a question a day and reading people's answers!

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth: Introduction to Becoming an Expert

This year during Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I'm writing about reading as a way of becoming an expert in a given subject.

Part 1: Introduction to Becoming an Expert

Previously I posted about "How to Get Good at Anything." That touched on "The 3 Book Rule to Become An Expert." The premise is that, if you have read just three books on a subject, you know more about it than the general level of knowledge. You don't know as much as a professional should, but you know enough to answer about 80% of questions on the matter. This is enough to be useful to most people regarding most issues in that area. The really complicated or difficult stuff can be left to the professional level of experts.

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs April 25-May 15. During this time, people post content only visible on Dreamwidth (although it can be reposted elsewhere after the event ends). There's usually a flurry of activity as bloggers share anchor posts, new fiction, icons, banners, questionnaires, friending fests, memes, and other goodies. Community hosts often hold special activities in their communities too. Watch your reading page for more festivities. (See the introductory posts from 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025.) To find posts for this event, follow the Threeweeks feed.

This year I plan to post about becoming an expert by reading three books on a subject. See "My Blog Is About..." for an overview of my blogging in general.

I have also posted about this event in my communities. See the entries:

Watching and reading roundup: Hadestown, Taskmaster, Cinder House, Hugos

I ended up going to see Hadestown with L while it was touring SF. I heard from her last year that she wanted to see it, so as soon as dates in SF popped up – I apparently get all these live performances ads now on Insta, after getting Ed Gamble tickets – I texted her, and she got two tickets, intending it to be for RH and herself. But I told her that if it did not work out for him to go (because at the time he lived in Napa, and it would’ve been a long drive on a weeknight), I was happy to be her plan B, and that’s what happened. The show and the experience, with marked spoilers )

So, I’m glad I ended up going to see it with L. I would not have bestirred myself on my own, but listening to / watching my favorite songs from the show on YouTube, I can tell I got stuff out of the live experience that I would not have gotten otherwise, and also, I’m glad I got to see this particular Hades. And L is the perfect musical theater buddy – she likes discussing stuff and knows more than me, and in this case there was also the shared interest in Greek myth (which is what we had with the Harry Potter play, too). B would’ve absolutely hated every aspect of it, from the crowd to the jazz to the singing, which all three of us agreed on, heh.

Oh, right, and when we came home, since we were talking about how much I like bass voices, I showed L some Tim Foust videos (which [personal profile] aletheiafelinea introduced me to back in the day), like Champagne Taste (On a Beer Budget) and Long Black Train , and the Home Free sea shanties.

*

Taskmaster s21e03 – I like Kumail’s shirt, with the white o white design. And Amy’s polka dot pinafore thing is very cute, too. Spoilers )

Joanna is the podcast guest, and she talks at the same density and speed as on the show, with Ed just sort of occasionally putting in a sentence or two XD Slight spoilers? ) Anyway, that was a ton of fun, and that was one I made a point of watching on YouTube rather than listening to, because I wanted to watch Joanna light up with laughter, and Ed’s expression as she just kept talking over him. What an absolute delight she is XD

*

Hugo nominations are out! Category by category thoughts )

*

And I should take this opportunity to finally write down my Cinder House thoughts. I read it, what, during my trip to Arizona, I think, and that’s been 6 weeks.

4. Freya Marske, Cinder House – I liked it a lot! I was not super swayed when I heard the premise – I have no particular devotion to Cinderella retellings, and ghost stories aren’t really my genre, and I wasn’t sure how this premise would play to what I’ve heretofore seen of Freya’s strengths as a writer in both pro and fanfic, but it’s just a really good book. More, with spoilers )

*

At some point I should also catch up on another 6 months of Elis & John Radio X shows, and a ~2 months worth of current E&J and adjacent things like How Do You Cope (newly returned) and John making appearances on other podcasts to promote Thirst, but that'll need to wait. (I have preordered a signed copy of Thirst, but how I'm going to get to read it before I see [personal profile] cafemassolit whose house it's being shipped to is still unclear...

For shore

Got an email a couple of weeks ago from a fellow up on Whidbey Island; his father had bought him a gift certificate with Off Center Ceramics as a Christmas present, and he wanted to order some tumblers. Wasn't sure how many, four, maybe six, wanted ocean life patterns, but wasn't more specific. I sent him a list of possible patterns, and waited for his reply.

And waited. And waited.

Finally couldn't wait any longer, had to finish glazing and load the kiln, so I picked out ten patterns featuring sea life and shore birds, and hoped he'd see something he liked.

Naturally, he emailed me Thursday night, right after I'd finished loading the kiln.

I sent him the list I'd made, directed him to my Instagram to see pictures. He chose seven of the ten, plus one that was already fired and in stock.

And ordered three more for my June firing.

Weren't we just here a second ago?

Yep, loading a glaze kiln again. Had so much work left over from my last firing that a quick week's throwing to fill the gaps, and about three days' glazing, and I'm ready to go again. Jon bailed out of his scheduled firing, so I loaded up the kiln on Thursday. Won't be firing until Monday, though; had to prep the van today, Market tomorrow, and Sunday is Denise's birthday. But things are all set to light the kiln off Sunday night, and I even got the leftovers counted and put away and cleaned up the glazing room, so there will be less busywork on Monday.

Today's birds

Today I made two short trips to a local stream and saw quite a few different kind of birds, partly with the help of binoculars:

  • Great blue heron wading in the stream
  • Hawk (red-tailed?)
  • Green-winged teals
  • Black-capped chickadees
  • American robins
  • A reddish finch (house finch?)
  • A hummingbird too far away to identify and too quick for me to binocular
  • A little yellow-and-black bird, probably a goldfinch but it was gone before I got a good look at it.
  • A tiny bird that I suspect was a golden-crowned kinglet because I think I saw a splash of yellow on its crown but again I didn't get a good look before it was gone.
  • Some brown sparrow-y birds that I couldn't identify
  • Plus the city birds I see all the time without going anywhere: pigeons, crows, starlings, gulls (glaucous-winged?)

I also saw some red admiral butterflies and I think I caught a glimpse of a scampering mouse-sized mammal but it got into cover too quickly for me to really see (probably just a mouse).

Frank brightened. “Please do. Or, I can put out word that I need a legal consult for a friend, and a young lawyer familiar with California law will look at the offers and walk you through any parts that you might not see immediately.” He drummed his fingers again. “I can do the same thing for the payout problems. Has insurance paid?”

Alun shook his head. “Brigid doesn’t know. I don’t want her to know.”

Lake Lewisia #1387

The little basilisk hissed, its beak gaping wide below huge, frightened eyes, and lashed its tail against the leaves and grass in an attempted mimicry of a rattlesnake. Newly hatched along with the spring tadpoles and toadlets, it had not yet developed poisonous breath, or stone gaze, or even a proper cockscomb. The hikers, who gently nudged it off the trail with a walking stick, would have nothing worse than a couple of slightly singed spots in their leg hair, where shorts had not protected them from the outraged glare of the tiny terror-to-be.

Final Fantasy XIV Teases New Expansion, Upgrades Free Trial, and Comes Soon to Switch 2

I'm going to try to put this under category spoilers, so those that don't want to read about a certain thing won't have to. I'm also going to TRY not to use the name of the expansion except for in the first spoiler, but I profusely apologize if I miss editing it out elsewhere.

First: the last announcement which is also a big one: the game will be coming to Switch 2. There's still testing to be done, but it sounds like the anticipated launch date is August of this year.

Second: The free trial is being upgraded to include the entirety of the Shadowbringers expansion. I am SO EXCITED for all my Free Trial friends, because Shadowbringers is +chef's kiss+.

Now, onto the spoilers:

New Expansion name and its theme, plus anticipated release date
Let's start with the Teaser Trailer for the next expansion of the game. Version 8.0 has been named Evercold, and will be bringing us to the 4th reflection come January 2027. Here's the teaser:

We've been told that the Fourth is a world ravaged by ice, but many of the screenshots and concept art we saw suspiciously lacked any such ice--something Producer Naoki Yoshida and his translator Christopher Koji Fox were eager to point out.

Dawntrail was the start of a new story arc for Final Fantasy XIV, and it firmly takes root with Evercold. This arc's theme has now been revealed as the "Godless Realms Saga".

New (non-playable, I think) race
Also teased was a look at one of the new races, a bipedal, short-statured cat-like race. Definitely more cat-like than the existing Mi'qote and Hrothgar. I am pretty sure these are NOT playable at this time, but I was busy taking notes... pretty sure it's just a race we'll meet.

Upgrades to gear progression system
The main theme going forward is "Bringing the game to the next level". They talked about the stagnation of doing the same thing over and over, such as farming tomestones, along with accounting for player feedback and the shifting gameplay styles of today's players and current lifestyes. Their aim is the build on systems they already have, but evolve them into something fresh and exciting.

One of the biggest changes will be to the tomestone system. Currently, it features daily rewards and encourages players to log in daily for max benefit. Going forward, the game will be shifting to a weekly reward system, along with two completely new user interfaces.

In the first interface, you'll get a list of weekly missions to accomplish. These can be duties or other activities in game. Some will only be allowed to run once during that week, such as Main Scenario Quests; other activities will be repeatable. Succeeding in a mission gets you activity points.

The second interface is a new gear upgrade system. Although it wasn't entirely clear from the images and explanations, it sounds like you'll be able to use your activity points in this new interface to upgrade your gear.

There's been feedback from the players over the current tomestone system and feeling left out if a player could not reach the 450 tomestone weekly cap. The developers are taking this into consideration, and may implement the ability to return to the previous week's missions in this new system--provided all missions for the current week have been cleared.

Shift in update release scheduleAlso announced: the move to a "Season" system of upgrades. Before anyone panics, this is NOT a new subscription fee, but rather just a way of grouping like content to be released, with the aim of having more frequent updates so there is less of a lull between patches.

Job Leveling & iLevel changes
The job system will also be getting some changes. While there will still be the ability to level all jobs separately (up to the new level 110 cap), there will now be a system where you can "reflect" your highest iLevel gear onto a different job. This means that if want to join a Savage raid but do not have the job you need leveled yet, you'll still be able to go provided you have at least one job at the iLevel requirements. Additionally, this will lessen the need to gear out several jobs, although those options will still be available for players who enjoy doing so.

Action glam, perhaps?
There's also a new "character action skins" system, that sounds like players will be able to choose between different stylized actions for certain abilities. Unfortunately, we have to wait for Berlin's Fan Fest for more info on this. It sounded to me like... glamming your abilities so you can be more flashy, but they really didn't say much about it.

Character Creation Customizations upgradesAdditionally--and to much cheering--upgrades to the character creation customizations were announced, including color pickers for eye color, hair color, and skin tone, as well as shadowing around the eyes and layering of facial paint. There will also be an option to toggle on/off pieces of gear-not the entire piece but a subset of it. An example was shown of heavy armor that had its pauldrons, sash, and skirt removed. Another example showed the Isle Explorer's gear without its backpack.

NEW JOBS!As expected, two new jobs are coming with this expansion. These will be a tank and a physical ranged DPS, and both are unique to Final Fantasy XIV. No hints of what the DPS might be, but as for the tank: producer Yoshi-P showed off his t-shirt which featured Rhitahtyn, the former enemy who uses two shields.

Battle system changesAlong with the new jobs is an overhaul of the job system in its entirety. They are introducing two new "modes". The 21 non-limited battle jobs available through Dawntrail will have access to the Reborn Mode, which is pretty much the actions and rotations we're used to but with some tweaks. Along with Reborn Mode, they are introducing Evolved Mode, which will simplify button press combinations while featuring the individuality of each job. Reborn and Evolved Mode will be available for the 21 jobs that exist today, and you'll be able to freely switch between modes outside of combat. Starting with this expansion, all new jobs released will only feature Evolved Mode. It was stressed that this mode is NOT to be considered an "easy mode", but will still be challenging to play. Care will be taken so that both modes can freely clear all content, but some content might be easier with one mode or the other.

Quality of Life and other shorter updates
Next, they announced some quality-of-life updates. One goal is to improve player experience in field areas, like more dynamic content so you can truly master those areas - while also working on making sure areas remain stable, aka no issues with too many debuffs crashing the servers. They're also going to add even more guidance to questing, with more info on this coming in Berlin.

Some quicker updates include:
  • Treasure Hunts, FATEs, and the Hunt are all sticking around with new updates - looking to evolve though to make them more interesting. An example was less FATEs popping in a zone but with more dynamic content for completion.

  • Instanced Dungeons will number about the same as in past expansions. They showed concept art for four currently in development.

  • There will be new gear and crafting recipes, as expected.

  • New threats - some vague concept art was shown, but they stressed they couldn't show us too much because of spoilers.

  • Theme for the 8-player raid to be released in Berlin

  • There will be PVP Updates, but not detailed

  • Duty Support System will be updated in 8.0. People are asking for option to enter dungeons in pairs - more details coming in Berlin

Normal Raid Tiers announcementOther bigger announcements include a new tier of the 8-person raids. Currently, players clear Normal raids about 85% of the time, and Savage about 20%. The developers feel this is too big a discrepancy, so they will be introducing a third tier falling between Normal and Savage. The goal is to allow more players access to gear progression but still keep the challenge for the hard-core players.

Alliance Raid Theme AnnouncementThe theme for the Alliance Raids has been announced - it's a crossover with Evangelion, tentatively titled "Ghosts of Desire". Unfortunately I had to go pee during this so I missed most of the info on it. Hey, it was a LONG keynote!

System RequirementsThe only system requirements update announced is the phasing out of PlayStation 4 around patch 8.3. We were told we still have two years to save up for a PlayStation 5. The developers worked hard with Sony to make Evercold playable on PS4 at launch, but they are running out of hard disk space for the game, so going forward PlayStation players will need a PS5.

Changes to queueing system and Party FinderPlayers will now be matched REGION-WIDE, so folks will no longer be limited to matching on their logical data centers only. So all of North America can be matched with each other. This applies to Party Finder as well.

After I finally finished work (our theory-of-change meetings are getting existential, this one gave me such a headache), I went outside to sit outside in perfect weather, barefoot, listening to the radio, reading my library book, and enjoying the smell of the neighbors' lilacs.

Then I made an easy dinner, and then D and I cycled to a nearby pub for a pint. A big trip for him! It's lovely that he's feeling up to doing stuff now that the weather is making it so much more fun to do things.

Meet Oscar

crocheted dog amigurumi, light brown and medium brown with embroidery-thread nose. The dog is a bit lumpy and haphazard, and sits on a sunny windowsill.

This is Oscar the dog, whom I finished making last night. Oscar’s kit was a Christmas 2024 present. Oscar has been sitting around in pieces on the dining room table for a long time; the crocheting of Oscar seems like a distant memory. It’s the sewing I just finished up.

I crocheted an ear in the wrong color, so decided one leg could be a different color than designated in the pattern as well, and it would all come out right.

I hadn’t crocheted since maybe age 9, so I was pleased to learn the basics again (in an age of free online videos made for left-handers). Will I make another amigurumi? I’m enamored of the backpack charms I’ve seen in Portland and Japan, so maybe an onion charm, in honor of Harriet the Spy.

Here and There

There's been a situation that has been making life stressful for the past year, and yesterday the stress doubled. My way of dealing with this kind of cosmic ass kick is to bury myself in writing, where I feel I have a pretence at control. I only say this because I might not be as responsive to posts as usual, and if anyone even notices a dearth of commentary from me (very small chance I realize) it's not you, it's me. Not gone, just coping and scribbling away.
