The second-last of the tiny papercutting suggestions on 3x5 cards. A forest, as suggested by twoeleven Forests are hard, I eventually gave up and cheated by cutting two 3x5 cards worth of forest, and stacking them with some tracing paper. It is, of course, a douglas fir forest. I didn't spend years analyzing data on douglas fir branching patterns for nothing! Woo!

I like the tracing paper mist fx very much. It rly does communicate "evergreen rainforest".

Thank you! Have you spent much time in such a forest? I think of your part of the world as very misty, but not very foresty. :)

I have family in Canada so I'm more aware of Pacific NW rainforests than most Brits (for whom "rainforest" = "Amazonian"). I grew up mostly surrounded by deciduous woodland and small-ish pastures with hedgerows, but dry for temperate England apart from occasional mists and low cloud, and with many mature trees, small skies, and no horizons, although in England the landscape changes every few miles due to our bizarrely varied underlaying geology so there were differing landscapes nearby. So I grew up on The Chalk but not entirely the Tiffany Aching kind where the inhabitants chopped down most of the trees centuries ago.

How is that a cheat? Any more than using foam dots to raise the first panel above the mist and second panel would be? It's just a different effect!

I feel like it was cheating, since I gave up on actually conveying a forest by cutting holes in a single index card. Cheating only against self-imposed expectations, I guess.

Also, that foam dots thing sounds like a good idea. Hm....

They're in the scrapbooking sections of most craft stores. The round dots are convenient, but buy the strip and cut your own rectangles about 1/4" wide, using an x-acto blade marked for the purpose, because the adhesive gets /everywhere/.

I use a plain box-cutter type with the break-off blades rather than my good X-acto knife.

Nah, I just tossed in the Shenan-- yes, of course I did. :) It's a pretty area; I recommend it when you're out east again.
