A good thing about today:

We fed the chickens leftover pizza from the pizza-eating contest yesterday. The chickens leapt upon the pizza with many delighted cacklings and immediately pecked at and devoured all the olives. I think maybe the shiny black texture of the olives is very visible to chicken optical processors. Like shiny little beetle bagels.

Mmm, beetle bagel.

One of my friends refuses to eat free range eggs because as he puts it: "My mother kept hens so I know what they eat." :-)

Ha, yeah. One of ours quite enjoys styrafoam and gets all indignantly beaky if you take it away from her.

Chickens and many other birds have an instinct to peck at dark spots, precisely because dark spots are often edible bugs.

The most reliable place to find my mutterings is tumblr, at this somewhat odd farming blog, though this year has been so busy I haven't even done much of that either. I miss journaling-with-friends, but I don't do very well at actually posting.
