I feel like the interestingness of sundogs follows a bimodal distribution over ice crystal degree of alignment. If the crystals are perfectly aligned, you can get a really bright false sun and pretend you're on a planet that orbits a binary or trinary star. And if the crystals are very poorly aligned, you can get some interesting smeared multicoloured stained glass lights. But in the middle between the two interestingness maxima, it just looks like a poorly defined false sun.
