A nice thing about today:

A praying mantis was hanging on to the outside of the window screen this afternoon. Whenjuli walked past it to get the mail, it waved its legs ferociously at her. It was adorablevery scary. juli is probably a little large to be eaten by even a very fierce praying mantis, though.

I had to extract another one from my house today, this time from the planter in the living room where it was jumping around and making a godawful racket amidst the houseplants.

That sounds pretty obnoxious. They're less common here; I don't think I'd seen one since moving to this state. So for it was definitely more "ooo, look at that" and less "oh geez, another one." :)

It was annoying to have a praying mantis racketing around in the house, but I am really quite fond of them as they are dedicated pest-eaters. So even if they are in human territory, I will go to considerable lengths in order to rescue them and transfer them safely outside.
